70th Birthday workout!

Athlete Profile on Sue, age 70

Sue celebrated her 70th birthday on July 2 in a unique way…she did a strength workout alongside her family at LIFT AND BREATHE!

At the request of Sue’s daughter Emily, we arranged a private class for Sue’s three daughters, her husband and son-in-law. This was the first ever birthday celebration in our studio and hopefully the start of many more!

A little background on Sue...she never played sports competitively, but she enjoyed swimming, riding bikes and group exercise classes for many years. She did step classes in the 80’s, spin, yoga and now LIFT!

Sue began lifting more than one year ago with us. She admitted that she was very apprehensive at the beginning, but was encouraged by a friend to try it. In Sue’s words, “Once I got to the studio, I knew it was going to be a place for me. I felt encouraged without feeling pressured. Not only was I encouraged by you, but also by others in the class.”

When asked about how she feels a year into lifting, Sue feels stronger! She pointed out that the biggest change is her confidence to try new things. She likes keeping track of her progress and she knows she will continue to see growth.

In terms of easing the Activities of Daily Living, Sue said the first thing she noticed was being able to lift her carry-on luggage into the overhead bin on her own! She felt really good doing that independently!

Sue’s favorite lift is the Bench Press because she felt strong once she could press the forty-five pound olympic bar. She has even begun to add weight! Well done, Sue. We made sure to include this in her birthday workout so Sue’s family could witness her strength gains. They were undoubtedly impressed.

For future goals, Sue said it’s to continue working out to gain strength and confidence. Sue said that LIFT classes have been a game-changer for her. She loves how encouraging everyone is at LIFT AND BREATHE and she looks forward to going to class and seeing people she now considers friends. Studies show that social connection is very important for aging adults and can make a significant and positive difference in overall health.

When asked what else she wanted to share, Sue said, “I’m happy that your class was recommended to me and that I took the next step to reach out and give it a try. You have a special place.”

We are very proud of Sue and grateful she is part of our community. It is never too late to start lifting weights!
